The Secretariat is the administrative arm of the United Nations, headed by the Secretary-General. It provides support to the other UN bodies and carries out the day-to-day work of the organization, including peacekeeping operations, humanitarian assistance, and political mediation.

The Trusteeship Council was established to oversee the administration of trust territories and ensure that their inhabitants were gradually prepared for self-government. It suspended its operations in 1994 after the last trust territory, Palau, became independent.
